The Rev. Dr. Annika Lister Stroope has joined our staff as a Parish Associate for Adult Education and Mission. This is a part-time position and includes oversight of our Sunday morning adult education program and our Tuesday evening Power Read mentoring program.
Annika was ordained in 2001 by the Presbytery of Des Moines. Her childhood church was First Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, and during her teen years, her family was active at Cottage Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church. In 1996, Annika gained bilingual Spanish-speaking skills living in Berlín, El Salvador and working with the Presbytery of Des Moines and Our Sister Parish. After completing degrees at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and McCormick Seminary in Chicago, Annika’s first call to the ministry was a chaplaincy position at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. Annika then served for nearly a decade as an associate pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis. In 2012, Annika was called to be senior pastor of the Federated Church of Columbus, Neb., a congregation of the PC(USA) and the UCC. She completed her doctor of ministry in 2013.
Annika has returned to Des Moines with her spouse, Jeremy West, a mathematics teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools. Annika is also working in the Des Moines Public Schools as a special education associate. Also, their daughter, is a 6th grader in the schools. Annika loves to catch a few moments each day for a bit of gardening at her family’s home near Grandview Park and “tris” triathlons. After more than 20 years residing in states bordering the great state of Iowa, Annika is grateful to live closer to her mother, who is a member of Central, and her brother and his family, who also live in Des Moines.
